The more severe Winter weather has added interest to the garden bird-life with the arrival of a few Fieldfares and a small flock of Redwings. The latter arrive almost unnoticed until the undergrowth is examined carefully (best with binoculars) - and the bird is revealed deep in the ground ivy, searching for food by pulling dead leaves etc out of the way.
For two to three weeks whilst the snow lay on the ground, one particular Fieldfare ruled the lawn, and the apples I distributed around the garden - spread out to try to give the dozen or so Blackbirds a chance to feed on the apples. The Fieldfare, however, flew from apple to apple forcing each Blackbird to retreat as soon as it dare appear. The Fieldfare hardly had time to eat.
